School is coming.  Few phrases garner so much excitement and trepidation all at the same time, right?

I’m a teacher and it is the last few days of July that start my most sleepless nights of the year – so full of ideas and questions that I can hardly sleep {excitement, trepidation}.

  • If you teach, maybe you’d like to get a little more sleep, too.
  • If you don’t teach, maybe you OR your household/workplace/office could use this little reminder.

My only classroom expectations {“rules”?} are these two:  Be kind.  Work hard.

It sums up everything I want our little community of learners to be about.  {Based on Rafe Esquith’s book}

Three things to know:

1.  We discuss what these look and sound like, practice them, and define them for every area of the building, with any teacher. {Did you know kindness comes out in how you compete in P.E., walk in the hallway, clean the lunch tables?  Did you know hard work is seen in the consistency of your homework, the way your learn your lines for the play, the assignments that are not “for a grade?”}

2.  Immersion here, is a good thing, and not just for the 10-year-olds.  I ran these through our school’s poster maker for the front of our classroom, and then – literally – put a set on every wall.  How’s that for thorough?

3.  Most importantly, these are expectations for our entire community.  Meaning, these are the expectations I have for myself.  I make it clear that I, too, am committed to teaching and leading with kindness and willing to “do what I have to do so that they can do what they have to do.”

Would you like them?  Wouldn’t the world be a better place if more of us committed to kindness and hard work?  Let me know how you use them!

  1. I love this :)
    Our house rules as stated on our chalkboard in the kitchen:
    1. Love God
    2. Obey right away
    3. Have a happy heart
    4. Be kind
    5. Work hard

    Maybe we are kindred spirits :)
